Projects unveiled

The Hooked on Books readers have had a busy session, focusing on a number of book projects.
They each created trading cards of their favorite characters to share. Then they chose a project to dive into. They have worked very hard to bring their books to life.
We have been sharing them for the past couple of weeks--what a fun time!

Ready for Session Two!

On January 4th we began our second session of the Hooked on Books Book Club. We have 26 students attending this session---that's a lot of readers!
Over the holiday break, students read their chosen book, either Al Capone Does my Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, The Mostly True Adventures  of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick, or The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill. We began our first meeting with students acting out a scene from their book:

This week, we used Big Huge Labs to create character trading cards from our sketches. They came out great! Each student will get five of their design to keep or trade.

Talking about books and imagining characters

Today we spent some time in our discussion groups talking about our books. Readers then worked on a draft of a  trading card of a book character. Mrs. Mullens  finished with a fun game of two truths and a lie. Another fun meeting of the Hooked on Books book club!

A visit from a real Crime-fighter

Officer Brian Ravish of the Deerfield police Department stopped by this week to share stories of how police officers solve crimes. Officer Ravish is the School Resource Officer in Deerfield, working with all five schools to keep everyone safe.
He walked us through a hypothetical heist in the library, and what we would look for. Muddy footprints? Fingerprints? Open doors? The children had generated a great list of questions for him, which he answered enthusiastically. We shared a delicious cake thanks to Mrs. Mullens and cups of popcorn.
We'll see if these new skills help our readers to solve their mysteries!

Week 3

It was great to finally break into groups and begin discussing our books! We also enjoyed tasty "bones" for snack, used our sense of touch to identify clues and prepared some questions for next week's visit from Officer Ravish. The hour just flew by!
